The Other Deadly Danger of a Flood As you likely know, every time there is a flood and basements fill with water there are concerns with "direct" water damage and the potential for mould growth. In addition, there are concerns with flood water coming in contact with a potable water supply, electrical power or extinguishing pilot lights on gas appliances to mention but a few. A very recent release from the Technical Safety Standards Association (TSSA) about "The Other Deadly Danger of a Flood" cites a case which took place in Niagara that sent four to hospital. In this case, during the flood clean-up process, large circulating fans were used to dry out the basement and reduce the potential for mould growth. Unfortunately, this caused negative pressure in the home (or back drafting) allowing Carbon Monoxide (CO) from the fuel fired furnace to spill back into the home. To read more about this, visit The Other Deadly Danger of a Flood. Carbon monoxide is known as the "silent killer"…it is colourless, tasteless and odourless...and it is attributed to thousands and thousands of people either being killed or injured each year.
