The Dangers of Water Damage

Professional cleaners are not always trained or setified in water damaged or remediation, but we can offer advice to our customers. I stress that the longer water dwells in an area, the more potential for damage, including the increased risk of bacteria and fungus growth. The source of water must be found and addressed quickly and water removal should begin immediately.

Water removal may require pumps and proper extraction equipment. A broad-spectrum disinfectant such as MICROBAN should be applied to prevent bacteria and fungus growth. Dehumidifiers and air moving equipment need to be used to remove the remaining water from the enviroment as quickly as possible.

The key is not to procrastinate, as the problems will just get worse and more expensive. I recently read an interesting article by Damien Romeo in " Professional Retail Store Maintenace" magazine about a flood in a store. The article mentioned that a retail store in a mall had a flood, wich was dealt with by store and mall employees. They closed the store for one day and removed as much water as possible for an estimated cost of $1000.00 Four months later employees started to complain of odours and of not feeling well. The store was found to be infected with mold. The store had to be closed for nine days to correct the problem, and the bill for mold remediation and store rebuilding was $65,000. This is what it means when we say " AN OUNCE OF PRVENTION IS WORTH A POND OF CURE"

Even if you are not a trained water damage professional or trained mold remediator, you need to be prepared to offer advice and guidance to your customers.
