- Rotary Method - scrubs shampoo into surface of carpet using brushes. Cleans surface well but deep-down dirt is either untouched or carried deeper into the pile by the shampoo. Carpet must be vacuumed later in a separate operation to remove dirt.
- "Steam" Method - the "steam" is in fact hot water sprayed into the carpet with detergent. Many steam cleaning companies say the water and dirt is removed "instantaneously" from the carpet through the use of powerful vacuums but then say the "normal" drying time is 6~12 hours. Obviously, there is still significant moisture left in the carpet. If too much moisture is left this type of cleaning can contribute to carpet shrinkage, browning, mildew and damage to carpet padding and flooring.
- Bonnet Method - similar to the bonnet cleaning of hard floors except substituting a web pad to theoretically buff the carpet. Many carpet manufacturers recommend against this method of cleaning due to a higher risk of carpet damage.

The foam contains only 10% moisture so your carpet dries quickly and is ready for use in an hour or so. There is no danger of carpet shrinkage, dry-rot, browning or mildew with this approach.
